Default 87 Blaster - shifting up, but not down

stop laughing. i love my blaster and really want to get her runnning again. Problem is she shifts up, but not down.

any suggestions out there. advice has been it's not the clutch.

tips on how to determine the problem would be very helpful.

thx.

the first thing i would do is jiggle the shifting lever and see if it was just a little out of place. but what it sounds like it ay be is that your shifing fork is bent just enough so that when you go to shift down it doesnt grab the drum. so you are prolly going to have to pull the motor and open the case, and then replace the shifing forks. i just had the same problem with a warrior but it wouldnt shift at all the guy who had it befor me wasnt verry nice to it.

Ya, I agree with turkey here. You'll have to split the case and check for bent shifting forks. take out the rods the forks slid on and roll them on a flat surface to see if they are bent. Check the actual shifting lever. It was bent in mine. Also replace all the seals and check your bearings while your in there.

Before getting too crazy, check spline on the shifter lever and shaft... If that looks ok then move onto checking inside the motor. Your shifter connects to a shaft that goes to the right side of the motor. That shaft has a part at the end that rotates the shift drum. It has a hooks for pulling and pushing the shift drum. If one of the hooks are bent or broken it will only be able to shift one way. There is also a spring that keeps the slop out. You can see if this is all working by taking the clutch cover off (right side) and trying to peak at the shift drum behind the clutch as someone trys to shift up and down. You should be able to leave the clutch installed to view it. You might have to move the wheels back and forth to get it to shift without running. If you can see the shift drum turning BOTH ways then you know the shifter is moving the drum and you do infact have a more internal problem.
