Default checking oil ?

Kind of a dumb question but here goes...
I went to our local dealer 45 miles 1 way to get new grips and a rear brake cable, and asked about a winch mount. while I was there I asked 2 techs " what is the best way to check oil level in the crankcase?" 1 response was to unscrew the dip stick wipe and screw back in then remove and check.. ok i thought

next tech said " unscrew dip stick wipe and just set it in the opening then remove and check oil level do not screw back in."

so what is the best way?

I would hhave liked to ask a third tech there to get a possibly another answer LOL
or a 2 to 1 anyway

so that's the question

Default checking oil ?

it kinda sucks that some bikes need the dipstick screwed in for the correct level reading, and others, even from the same manufacturer, need it resting on the top thread. I think it's to keep the sale of manuals steady haha. When I aquire a bike I am unfamiliar with, I get it so the oil is on the "low" side of the dipstick when it's resting on the top thread. That way if it's a "don't screw in" bike, the level is still acceptable, and if it's a "screw it in" bike, I haven't overfilled. Then when get a chance, if I even keep the bike, I get the correct answer and re-check.

RTFM - Do what the manual says. Instructions for checking the old can be bike dependant. But doing it either way probably won't hurt the bike.

LMFAO... WOW Just use a little common sense. If you screwed it in there would only be a 1/4 of an inch difference so it dosnt matter either way. The oil marking gap is way to big for 1/4 inch to evan be a problem. Just make sure the stick reads oil on it.
