Default Help with my Buzzing Raptor.. won't start!!

Okay.. I charged the battery.. (Not completely).. and I jumped the wires at the relay.. fired right up. This bring me back to the battery again. I ran it for about 2-3 min shut it off and put the charger back on the battery. Motor sounded solid, running without a hitch. Hopefully I can get this thing started on it's own.

By jumped the wires at the relay, you mean the screwdriver trick? or used new wires in parallel with the existing one from battery to relay and relay to starter? Need more detailed description.

I just jumped a wire from the relay's negative and positive posts. Starter cranks without the key turned on to the "on" position.

The relay doesn't have 'positive and negative' posts. One post is positive from the battery, other post is switched positive to the starter.

If you shorted across the two large terminals on the relay and the starter turns just fine, but will still not start while pushing the start button, then the relay or the wiring to it is probably bad.

BUT this does not jive with the 'chatter' you were describing in the beginning of this post. That is always related to voltage (at the relay winding) being too low. I think you are starting to affect the troubleshooting by making too many changes at once and then not describing in detail exactly what you have done.

Does the relay still chatter when you push the start button? Under the same conditions, when you short across the two large terminals of the relay, does the starter turn over nicely?

Quad are you so lucky to have so many dunes near you. I would imagine 110 degrees can be blistering. I am assuiming it's dry heat. With the sun relfecting off the sand it only makes it worse.

I put everything back, charged the battery while it's on the bike. Tried to start it... CHATTER. I am going to bridge the gap from the battery instead of the relay and try it from there. Will post.. again Maniac.. thanks for your input. I am really going bonkers on trying to figure this thing out. Once I resolve this I got ONE More issue to bug you on. THanks again.. too bad you live so far.. I'd join you freaks for a ride.

PLease explain what you jumped to where that made the starter work properly. I don't see enough info to piece it together.

Default Help with my Buzzing Raptor.. won't start!!

Hey Maniac,

Okay I am done with this today.

I tried bridging it (running a wire across) both posts off the battery.. neutral light goes off nothing really happens. Only way I can bridge it to work is within the two posts on the relay itself. WHen I do that with the ignition turn on or off.. it will spin the motor.

I got an e-mail from my bud who said he was having the same symptoms and he noted it was the 1 way bearing. Now I had that go out on me before but it was a totally different issue (I paid the local yamaha dealer 800 bucks PLUS I supplied the one way bearing and gear I will never return to them crooks again). I never had the battery buzz problem more like a fast spinning sound and nothing cranks over.

I did get it started after charging the battery once or twice, but as soon as I shut it down, even tho it ran for a while.. will not start up again. It seems as either if something is draining the battery down, perhaps it's not decompressing at startup, or something else is making this thing hard to turn over. I'm all out of ideas.

BTW Starter never really worked properly... always slow to crank over. Seem to turn over easier after I charged the battery (again, and again, and again, etc).

If you do EXACTLY as I say, and stop listening to 'buds' and stop doing other things that don't make sense... we'll have it figured out in 2 minutes.

It has NOTHING to do with the starter one-way. Ignore buds.

What the hell is running a wire across both posts off the battery? No wonder the lights went off, you are shorting out the battery. ANd if it wouldnt start again after that, i wouldnt doubt it, you severly discharged the battery in the process of shorting it out.

First: Charge it thouroughly for at least 24 hours.

THEN

IF you can get it to turn over sometimes with the relay... AND
IF it chatters the rest of the time AND
IF it starts just after the battery has been charged AND
IF it doesn's start after removing the charger and after a few attempts at starting -

it usually means the battery is dying.

WHEN you CAN"T get it to start cuz the relay is chattering THEN AND ONLY THEN short across the two large terminals of the relay with a screwdriver or thick jumper wire (doesn't matter if key is on or off). IF this makes the starter turn over (quickly, like normal) then the solenoid is probably bad. If it turns over slowly or barely, then the battery is bad or the cable between the battery positive and the relay is bad, or the battery ground connections or wire is bad.... I'm repeating myself now.

DO you have a voltmeter? a couple of measurements will tell you exactly where the problem is.

I am going to either borrow or buy one tomorrow. Yes when I run a wire across the relay posts it churns over very slowly. I am e-mailing a bud to see if we can look into to tomorrow. Thanks again Manaic.
