Default yamaha 400 4x4 ???

This 424 select system, I have a question, I noticed they list it for '97 but was wondering has anyone put one of these on a '95 Kodiak, I would love to be able switch in and out of 4 wheel drive, which would make the machine a bit less squirrelly. I was not even aware something like this was around, until I read recon's post.

Thanks in advance.

Default yamaha 400 4x4 ???

Update... Somebody ran it w/o oil apparently. The wrist pin locked up in the rod and caused the piston to **** towards the front which caused the piston to seize to the cylinder and almost break the skirt completely off. A bore job n new piston is no big deal, but I'm concerned about the rod. It has a 1/16 - 1/8 wide score around it in the very center (right between the 2 oil holes ironically). Also, the crank, near the rod journal, the metal is blue from heat. The rod bearings feel ok, but who knows... I'm wondering if I should just put a new piston and wrist pin in and see what happens or junk the whole thing? I really doubt anybody is going to finance splitting the cases and buying a new rod. Its a shame too because the rest of the quad is like brand new, just a little faded from the sun. All the chassis bearings are tight and the rubber looks new. The tires actually have a lot of tread, they just sat flat for yrs and cracked at the bottom. Anybody still want to give $500 for it and come pick it up??? LOL

PS. The cam looks new. All the case-hardening is still there. Cam bearings are tight. Rockers have a little wear, especially the exhaust, which looks like the hardness is worn off. The valves though rusty, are tight and not much wear on the actual valve surface. It looks like somebody brought it home from the dealer and never checked, changed, or even gave the oil a thought. Just rode it until it died.

You could probably pick up a used crank on ebay for cheap. Whether you wait and see if the one in it goes out or gets worse is your call.

Guy at the dealer that I figure should know said it is a very solid machine and he didn't seem too concerned about the rod. He was more concerned about the cam journal. He thinks $250 and put it back together and it should be ok. I guess that's what's going to happen next. Should be at least another week before all the parts get back to me. I can post back on how well it runs (or doesn't) if you want....
