I have the '04. I've heard of stator problems on the '04. The guy I bought it off of said he had to replace it. I've had it about a year with no troubles yet.

Another big prob with the yfz's are that apparently a faulty design by yamaha keeps the wrist pin and under side of the piston from being oiled properly? I know there are "oil mods" to fix the problem.

Yamaha bumped the bore up for I believe its the '06's to 449cc from 439cc on previous models they also improve the suspension every couple years.

With that said I absolutely love my yfz. Some ppl have issues with the seat being uncomfortable. I really don't have an issue with it. I moved up from a 400ex that I loved also but this thing is just more fun and a better ride all over. I'm 6'2" 240 and the thing fits me like a glove. The ONLY thing I dislike is that the friggin header raps around in front of your right leg and it gets HOT. I have literally burnt spots on 2 pair of jeans.

The 07 yfz has more oil jets in the wrist pin for better lubrication, so that isn't a problem anymore.

I have a 07 YFZ SE I love it to death even threw the trails like some people said but I'm an athletic teen if that makes a difference? Not to many extras on it yet but will soon.

You will be happy with the YFZ. Great all around quad with plenty of aftermarket support. Yes, the oil squirter is a common mod when building the motor and yes Yamaha has made this OEM on the newer models. It is not necessary nor will your motor fail prematurely without the mod unless you truely abuse it. If/when I ever build the motor I'll include it for peice of mind. The '04 had a few minor flaws but they can easily be dealt with and buying used the unit will likely have been updated anyway. The faults I have changed on mine include swapping out the thumb throttle lever for a longer one and higher bars. Both of those were for comfort. I have never heard of major engine problems with these, not sure I would rate them less reliable than the Honda.
