I am looking at buying a 660 Raptor. There are several in my area that are for sale however I have heard to stay away from the 2001's due to tranny problems. Did all 2001's have this problem or just the early 2001's?

I have heard that people were in 5th gear pinned and the tranny locked up. It caused the rider to fly over the handlebars and he got seriously injured. So in my opinion, I would stay away from the 01's.

LOL

That's a new one to me, especially since it's 2nd gear that goes out.

Visit a site called www.raptortranny.com and you can get the whole story on what goes bad, what needs to be fixed and how to fix it.

sounds like one of the fish stories...only with quads, i'm curious how yamaha would still be in business if that really happened

Even if the tranny goes out, just rebuild it. I think it costs like $600 for the parts to rebuild the whole thing, so if you find a 2001 that hasn't had the upgrade tell the seller to knock off $900 and you will buy it. They will probably knock some off because nobody is buying the 2001 models because they are scared of the tranny issues.

Then again if it comes time for you to sell it, you will have the same problem.
