86 Moto4 - 225cc Tranny Question (HI/LOW)
I'm supposed to pick up an 86 225cc Moto4 ATV next week. I'm buying this particular ATV because they're pretty reliable and robust to work with. Now I have one concern and I can't find the answer on the web. The guy selling it is telling me it has only High gear and Reverse (in fact, the ATV can go reverse and all gear in forward ) . I tough that they all had High and Low . He's telling me no. I basically need this machine to work hard and pull 30 to 40 feet trees.
Is it possible that this ATV have no LOW ?

86 Moto4 - 225cc Tranny Question (HI/LOW)
Does he mean the low does not work or it does not have one period. My 86 Moto4 had a low range, there should be a short lever down beside the motor that selects it.
It was a very reliable bike for me. Yamaha got out of the sub transmissions on it's semi autos for cost saving measures, now they just offer a super low 1st gear.

He mean that it has no LOW at all. It seem pretty odd to me as I'm concerned that he might be trying to cover a problem with the tranny. To put you in context, I have no knowledge whatsoever on ATV in general. It's my first ATV and I just want to be sure to buy the correct one.
The lever you're talking about, is the same lever that he used to switch it in Reverse (on the left side, tranny side)? Can you tell me the "shift pattern" of the lever (like Hi-Low-Reverse). Or is it another lever on the other side?
Thanks for the help

I know, pretty much all the Moto4 on sale has the Hi/Low feature in the description. I think that the reverse was an option , but for the High/Low I'm not sure.
To my knowledge, oil cooled motor are 350cc and higher and they only appear in 87 or 88.

86 Moto4 - 225cc Tranny Question (HI/LOW)
I forget the Pattern now, but from what I remember the lever selected the high low and reverse was the left side. I think the lever full back was reverse and it had to be in neutral, the low and high were the two notches forward forget the order though,if low was the first notch forward or second.

86 Moto4 - 225cc Tranny Question (HI/LOW)
i have a 87 mtot 4 225 which says high/low on the side but i cant figure how to get it low. i have posted this same question last month but got no help. the only thing i thought was that low on mine was n/g ? i have owned this for a year and i use it around the yard for work. it has never let me down, i pull logs and haul rocks around and haven't needed low yet, but would still like to have the option of using it. i have tried all different ways of locking it in but no go. good luck with your quest. if i find any info my way i'll post it
