advice for a beginner

I have been doing allot of research on tires for my grizz what you have to ask yourself is how extreme do you want to go. Outlaws are the baddest mud tire around but you will need a kidney transplant if you use them on a trail. Vampire's or ITP Mudlites are other good choices. From all that I've read I am going with Maxxis Mudzilla's they have a very aggressive tread, but are not as hard on the trails and seem to last longer than most so for me it's the best all around tire.
If you are going to be in the mud parks you will probably need a snorkel. If you have the money buy a kit from "Bayou Snorkels" they have tried and tested and will not leak. If not then you can do it yourself it just takes some time and some planning. I did mine in about 2 days and I bought all of my materials from Home Depot and O'Reily. Here's an important tip: when you have it tore apart to install the snorkel put some dielectric grease on all of your electrical connections and don't forget any around the front or rear end if you have any, I have some down low on the front diff lock. Also re - tube any other small vac lines, on the grizz I have the radiator fan motor vent, carb breather, and the front and rear end breather lines I just routed them up to my handle bars.
For where you are riding I think these are some of your first steps you will want to get a clutch kit soon after the tires to help pull them through the mud that will solve all of the issues Mile High has about big tire on a 450.

Don,t the Grizzlies already come with 12" alloy rims,or do you just want to change the rims for looks sake?

I haven't checked the skid plate, but I will when I wash here in a day or two. I imagine that I will find them beat up a little cause I already got a crack in my plastic by the foot brake. As far as the terrain I'm mostly in, it would have to be sand, dirt trails, and MUD! I love running through it, sling'n it, and helping anyone getting unstuck. Not looking into getting into anything over my knees too often. So yeah I'm looking into mud tires (haven't mad any decisions). I got steel rims that came stock. I thought about leaving them and just getting tires, but I'm told alloy is lighter, stronger, and easier to clean behind (like around the brakes and hard to reach spots) and I'll get a better deal as a package.
Also, could ya'll give me some ideas for exhaust. the stock pipe is a little quiet for my liking and I was curious if opening it up some would increase the performance a little. But not too loud where I have to yell over it. another thing is......is the independent suspension known for tipping over/ flipping? I notice CraZy Steve did, in his pictures and some one else mentioned it with tall tires.

I don't think IRS makes you more prone to roll over, I've had a SRA roll over (damn hill), and go on its side twice. Its all about terrain, moving your weight around. If you ride crazy, or on off camber then yeah you'll probably roll, if you ride sensibly you probably won't. Having an escape plan never hurts, though.

Well in my pictures.. I was backing down from a hill that was too sandy... too steep... I should have spooled the winch out and hooked it to a tree higher up... and used the winch to help me while backing... so this was ENTIRELY my fault [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img]
Stock plastic skids are mediocre at best... if you aren't rock bashing alot and hopping over trees then I'd say you'd be ok until you got the cash..
If you do plan on riding off-camber ---- I highly suggest that you remove your Rear-Sway bar links! And maybe pull out hte sway-bar all together...

Well in my pictures.. I was backing down from a hill that was too sandy... too steep... I should have spooled the winch out and hooked it to a tree higher up... and used the winch to help me while backing... so this was ENTIRELY my fault [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img]
