New grizzly 400 here. 30 miles on it, no mud or sand riding. Leaking gear oil out the left side of the differential, where the green "cap" goes into it.

I supposed it would have to be a seal that isn't sealing. Is this a common problem with an easy fix, or do you (likely) have to take the whole rear-end apart? I suppose they would fix it for free under warranty. Is Yamaha's warranty totally free? Thanks.

 

If it is still under warranty I would think they would fix it for free. It is not real hard to fix but you do need to pull a few things out of the way and jerk the axle out of the diff.

 

i think they jerked something of his if that thing has 30 miles on it and its already leaking. id be mad. call the stealership. that is a warranty issue for sure.

 

This seems to be a too common of a problem. My Wife's 450 had a seal go out when it was almost new. I found other people had the same problem. I don't know if it is a problem with the seal or assembly in the factory. The good news is that it is an easy fix.

Yes it's a common problem with the seal especially in the rear diff. The dealerships say that it's caused by grass and other debris getting at the seal. Sort of sounds like pass the buck and I say this may be true but then the design is flawed.

None the less it's relatively easy to do and in your case I would insist on warranty replacement at no cost.

I have been told that some people place a boot similar to a CV boot over the area where the seal is to prevent seal damage from debris. The only problem with doing this is you can't see when it begins leaking and if you don't check it or the oil level in the diff often you may wreck the diff from oil loss.

 

Another sure way to destroy that seal is to use a "Car-Wash" pressure washer to wash your quad!
