We measured the exhaust pipe on a YFZ450 with it idling, and it was around 700 degrees (F). After installing a heat shield, the temp of the shield was around 400 degrees (F).

 

The only thing that I would be concerned about is your starter smoking. Is it disengaging after it starts?

 

what do you mean disengaging? it is really tough to start back up after its ben rinning and it stalls out
