2 strokes do this all the time. You should be pulling the jug once a season and changing rings and head gaskets anyway. Pistons about every two years or so... If you race it or spend a great deal of time at full throttle, then you will doing htis even more often. When I was much younger on a 250 race bike, I used to re-ring every 3 races. The motors are more complicated now, but the old blaster two stroke is as simple as they come. When buying the parts, plan on buying extra head studs at the same time, yo uwill invariably break one every time the motor comes apart. You do not have to split the cases, Just pull the jug and leave the bottom end alltogether. Stuff a rag in teh hole as you pull it apart so you don't get any dirt and junk in the case. If you need anew jug and piston, now is a good time to upgrade.

Dragginbut, you are right about the re-ringing and putting new pistons in. We run a 13 show series so counting practicing would be 39 races. We have the cylinder coated so we don't re-ring, we do check the compression after each show. We typically run 135-130 psi, if we drop down low we just replace the piston which this year was once. You know as well as I that the piston slop is probably the largest contributing factor in broke pistons. After alot of races and maintenance that is questionable is costly and you learn quick that air filters clean easy and are cheap. One thing that we haven't done is broke or pulled a stud, I did once when we first started racing but was my own fault torqueing it too much.
