96' yamaha warror with jet kit
#1
I have a 96 yamaha warrior I just bought it... All I was told is that it's jetted, it has no aftermarket air filter, but any way it will only start if I hold my hand over the exaust very strange That I would even try that but it works....But don't know why any help to a novice would be greatful

it must be incorrectly jetted, prolly too lean but im not positive. maybe the needle is on the wrong slot, alotta people mix that up on the warrior jet kits because the dynojet needles have 6 slots on them instead of 5

If you live at a normal elevation and the bike is all stock then there is really no reason for it to be jetted in the first place. I would put the original needle in with the clip in the 3rd position and replace the 145 main jet.

well the good thing about the dynojet kit is that that needle with 6 slots in it is a different design then the stock one and it works better actually. but without mods it might not make a diff but with me i know it did make it a lil more responsive, also you can try readjusting your fuel screw

Well you are going to have to change the jetting--but I personally don't see how the heck that would affect holding your hand over the exhaust. I think your valves need adjusted, because it sounds like its releasing the compression too early. The exhaust valve should be between .016-.020 clearance at top dead center and the intake valve at .006-.010 at TDC. To put the motor at TDC you need to remove the timing cover on the left hand side cover (its the black plug with the big slot in it for a screwdriver) and then take the side cover off (just the outer with the Yamaha logo, it has 4 6mm allen head bolts) and crank the motor around by hand with a 17mm wrench or socket/ratchet until the mark with a T on top of it comes up, and then you can check your valve clearances by taking the valve covers off and running a feeler gauge between the tappets and the spring retainers. You do need to take off your fuel tank and front plastics to make this a much easier job..and trust me, its not hard to do at all. You will have to remove the spark plug to crank the engine by hand, also.
