is there any difference between a 2000 and a 2001 kodiak besides the speedo kit?

The only difference is the speedometer. I have heard that the 2000 model can develop an oil leak at the plug where the speedometer cable would get bolted in. You can install the optional speedometer or else check with the dealer for the fix that Yamaha has for the problem.

Nope. BUT if you haven't already you should get a rear diff boot guard/skid plate. That boot is in a bad spot and can come off or get ripped fairly easy. Just take a look under your machine and you'll see what I'm talking about.

I never would have noticed the problem if no one pointed it out to me and I'm glad someone did. They only cost around $20 I think. Good investment.

Where did you get your guard? I'm looking for one myself. Thanks

I had the plug come out of my 00. Just a lot of luck the operator noticed the oil in the snow and shut it down I think before any engine damaged. I would sure check the speed-o drive connection often, or at least enough to get confident it isn't going to come loose, cause if it does disaster awaits. Ditto on the boot guard, had to replace one of those also.

They've also switched all the electrical connections to marine grade plugs.
