Default Warrior won't start won't move in gear

Hello,

I have a 1999 Warrior which is experiencing some problems.
I noticed a few weeks ago that the starter was sounding 'clunky' when I was attempting to start it. Finally it gave out and now it's impossible to start it using the electric start.

Today I replaced the battery, to no avail.

I can't shift the bike into 2nd gear.
It can freely shift from 1st to neutral though.
The rear wheels lock up when it's put into first gear. They only move a touch. What could be the problem?

What should I check first?

I finally got the thing in gear past first, and it's rolling with resistance as it should when in gear.

I pulled the starter and took it apart. The thing is packed full of carbon deposits.
I will clean it tonight and test it tomorrow after I've eaten a ton of food.

Hopefully I can get this thing started.
