Default I think Yamaha should of kept making the 660 Grizzly.

07 660 vs 09 550 grizzly

There Specs look the same but the 660 has a larger more powerful 660 5 valve motor that Yamaha has used for years on the ON/OFF road motorcycle and supermoto for years. Xt660 supermoto

You can bet Yamaha did not put the new 550 motor in the motorcycles for a 660 replacement.

Even the new 700 motor did not replace the 660, Yamaha just upped the compression ratio and added EFI to the current 660 Motorbikes instead.

The old 660 cost the same and had diff lock, same suspension travel and lacked nothing in features.

Polaris 850______69.06 hp
Can Am 800 R____67.05 hp
AC 1000_________65.84 hp
Can Am 800______61.7 hp
Can Am 650______55.4 hp
Brute 750 Carb____50.1 hp
Brute 750 EFI_____49.8 hp
King Quad 750____49.6 hp
AC Mud Pro_______49.06 hp
King 700_________48.5 hp
Polaris 800_______48.3 hp
Grizzly 700________45.6 hp
Polaris 700_______44.3 hp
AC 700 H1_______41.4 hp
AC 700__________41.4 hp
Grizzly 660_______40.9 hp
Can Am 500______40.4 hp
AC 650 H1_______39.3 hp
Rincon 680_______38.5 hp
Grizzly 550________36.9 hp
King 450_________36.7 hp

Yamaha discontinues a ATV that still beats out many current ATV that other manufacturers still make to this day.

I agree with what you say but there or other variables such as metting emmisions requirements, weight to to power ratio, price to build that are causes for change. I am willing to bet the 550 will out last or atlest have a lower maintance cost over the life of the engine compared to the 660. This might not sound like much to you or I but in the grand sceem of things makes for big $$$$$ for Yamaha!

Yamaha made the 550 because for the longest time they have been getting smoked in the 500 Utility Class... I mean I love my Grizzly 450.. but I'd love a 550 even more

There are two huge differences over the 07 Grizz 660 and the 09 Grizz 550 (ok one is by choice) Fuel injection and Power Steering...

You can also argue that the lower engine in the chassis and high arc lower A-arms is better too.. I mean we all know that Yamaha hit a home run or two with the introduction of the Grizzly 700 FI / EPS... As much as I wanted their 500 class ATV to be smaller... they took the cheap / easy way out and simply changed the 700 FI motor a little (different combustion chamber / cylinder head / smaller bore )

If I could afford one.. I'd replace my Grizzly 450 with a 550 in a second... but... my 450 is working just fine for me... and I don't have the beans anyhow.. hahaha..
