Leave the lid on and drill some holes in the top, on the right side(not above the filter). This will give you some added air flow. But when you know your going to get in some water, Use duck tape and cover the drilled holes. That's want to did on my old blaster.

you can do without the hose to. I just left the hose connected to my motor and let it just stay there. I havent had any problem. i would suggest pro flow air filter. It actually bolts up to your air box so no dirt can get around it filter, like stock can. this will seal everything up.
Now i have a question for you, where did you get your headlight covers? thanks and i hope this helps!

He already has a vented airbox lid and now wants to take it off. Get the pro design pro flo kit and i read some people take a little air filter from a auto parts store on the end and zip tie the hose to the frame up high somewhere.

I removed the breather hose and installed a k&n style breather on mine. If you stick your finger over the end of that hose while it's running, you'll notice that it suck air in also. As the piston is on it's up stroke the crankcase is under negative pressure. I wouldn't advise leaving it unfiltered.
Just my opinion.....
