Default Valve Adjustment

Ok so i want to check my valves on my 89 warrior not sure when the last time it has been done, and i just got it 3 weeks or a month ago, i have never done it before, im familier with car engines but not small engines.

I stopped and got a feeler gauge just now so i can check the gap. And in the service manuel it says a valve adjustment tool? Do i need this or can i just use a wrench?

Also do you need to take off all that stuff just to get to the valve? (gas tank and such)

Any tips and tricks would be awesome.

Thanks

never mind the gas tank question i just went out and looked at it and you have to take it off.

yea you just gotta pull the gas tank off the two valve covers, cam cover, and stator window plug, and the plastic cover on the stator cover to turn the bolt with a wrench, then get it at TDC, you will just need a feeler gauge and a wrench for the nut and a wrench for the valve adjuster so you can hold it still while you tighten the nut after you make an adjustment, just make sure after you tighten it up real good to measure it again and make sure its still within spec, i think i usually use needle nose vise grips to hold the adjuster still while i tighten the nut.

cam cover is the round cover left side of engine it has 2 bolts, and the plastic cover is the one that says yamaha on it left side also, it just covers a bolt, and you turn that bolt to get your engine to TDC

the plastic one you are talking is about, is it the cover that holds the pull start?
