Kodiak Freewheeling down hills
I have a 2000 Kodiak 4x4 and the transmission freewheels when going down hills sometimes. If I bring the idle up just a little, the engine braking works again.A little info about the quad:it has about 3500 miles on it with the original belt, has had water in it before(not a whole lot but some),and has been rolled once by my sister.I took it apart last night and it has a bunch of black stuff (doesn't look like motor oil)everywhere on the pulleys, but the belt seems ok and tight.Could it be the sprag or a worn belt? The engine oil definitely needs changed too.Any inputs are appreciated.-Paul

When water gets on a belt it caused the pulleys to go dark Grey almost black with a oily look, from rubber residue. Nothing a cleaning will not cure but after 3000 miles change the belt anyways. Here is a good cleaning the clutches link. Nyroc's ATV info website
