Keeping my Carb clean! Need advice!
#1
I have a 07 Yamaha Wolverine 350. It is auto and has a carburator.
It sat for 2 years since I last rode the bike. This is my first bike so I didn't know what to do as far as long term storage goes.
So recently I charged the battery and started the bike. The bike would idle very high! I asked my ATV friends about it and they said the carb would have to be cleaned out. I went to the Yamaha dealer and they said the same and that it would cost me $150 bucks. I decided to learn about cleaning the carb and bought the necessary products. It cost about 30 bucks for carb jet spray cleaner and yamalube carb cleaner and compressed air and some shop towels. No big deal.
I started the tear down and I went slow to remember everything I did. I finally remove the float boat from the carb. To my surprise the float boat and carb were perfectly clean! I learned alot about how the carb works as I took it apart. I put everything back together. I figured all I had to do what manipulate the idle control adjustment screw.
Guess what....that all I had to do.....adjust the idele control screw...LoL
I took it out for a ride the next day and everything worked just fine. I have to play a little more on getting the right adjustment as I still had to leave the chock open a bit to keep the bike from stalling...
So now that I got the story out of the way here is my questions.
1. what is the best additive to use to put in the gas tank to help keep the carb clean?
2. After every ride I am turning the fuel to OFF and draining the carb...how much does this help keeping the carb clean?

1. SeaFoam. Mix it with the gas according to directions on the can. Use Stabil for long term storage of fuel. Use fuel from a reputable station. My dad taught me to buy fuel from someone who sells alot. That way the fuel is fresh.
2. Shut the gas off and let the quad idle till it stops running. It keeps the bowl and carb jets clean by not allowing gas in the bowl to gel.
Congrats on taking the initiative to do this yourself.

Are there any negative effects to doing this? Sounds interesting, and makes sense, I'm wondering if I should do it even with Stabil in it?

this will not harm a thing!

I'm going to start putting marine grade gas in it for the final tanks of the season. It has no alcohol (at most marinas around here), it has valve tec added to it, and I'm going to add seafoam too once I get it running again....my carb would'nt let any gas thru either.

No need to really go that drastic on it with the gas. Just run regular gas and run seafoam through it occasionally and on your last ride if you don't plan on riding again for a while.
