Default 2005 Yamaha Kodiak 450 rear brake issue

Well, I bought a used 05 kodiak and when I bought it, the rear brake did not work. The brake pad was completely worn out. I replaced them and still the brakes do not work.
When I push down on either the left hand brake (for the rear) or the foot brake, it is like there is no pressure and absolutely no brake. I am 99% sure I put the pads on correctly. I think it is some other issue.
Anyone have any ideas on what I should be looking for or what I could check myself???????
I am no machanic, but I did figure out the pads. Help please.....

Awesome site by the way, great resources.

Is there back fliud in the rear brake reservoir? It should be under a side panel (#13 in pic), not the one on the handle bar, thats for the front brakes. If it does have fliud it may need to have the air bleed out of the rear system.

bigjim, I have always found the rear brakes on the Kodiak almost useless. The only answer i ever got, after having the same complaint, was that Kodiaks should use the Yamaha OEM pads only and all of the after-market pads aren't very good. My brake levers are both tight (no fade or sponginess that would indicate a problem with air), new pads, yet it feels like i have no rear brakes at all.

mine is an '03 450.

Also check the cable. If it is stretched enough you won't have brakes. The cable can be adjusted.

I have an 05 kodiak 450 4x4 and the rear brakes dont work the best imo it has the factory pads on it .I bleed the brakes and it really didnt help. The rear brake reservior is under the front panel under the front luggeg rack.I did adjust the foot brake lever and it helped a little. It is located behind the right front wheel same side as rear brake foot lever.
You will have to take off pannel behind front tire. The front brakes work supper.Hope the new kodiak's rear brakes work better that they are sealed wet brake.
