Oil in with the Stator
#1
I have a '86 Yamaha Moto 4 225 and it doesn't have any spark. When testing the resistance on the stator and coil I found that the coil is bad and needs to be replaced. Once I took the stator cover off there was a lot of oil that came out. I am wondering if this is normal? Does this year Yamaha have an wet stator (oil cooled)?
Thanks for the help.

yes,it is a wet stator. I have a 86 moto 4 225 too and had to replace the starter clutch. o and wach out with the retaer bolt for the pully they like to strip out the threds on the crank shaft. put some medium thred locker on it.

what did you get for readings on the two coils, i am curious since i had same problem on a timberwolf, i ended up just replacing the pick up coil and that solved my spark problem, and yes oil dump out on me too, what a mess but that is normal!

I got no reading off of the pickup coil and a reading of 308ohms off of the stator. Accorrding to the service manual the stator needs a reading of 320ohms + or - 10% at 68 degrees and and reading of 200ohms + or - 10% at 68 degress.

Looks like you also only need to replace the pickup coil, you can buy one from ricky stator for $40, yamaha will only sell the complete stator assembly. you and i have the same situation, my coil reading was 300 ohms, but my pickup coil showed no ohms. replaced bad coil and you will get spark
