Default 2001 Bear Tracker 250

When I choke the machine it tries to start, and if I take my hand and put over the exhaust while trying to start it fires right up. Can someone please explain what my problem may be? Has anyone ever heard of this?

Thanks

OK, 38 views with no response. As a new member it looks like I about about to teach you all a thing or two. I t seems that I have a dirty carb. By placing my hand over the exhaust it allows just enough fumes to build up in order to start the machine.

Any suggestions on additives to run through the fuel to clean up this problem?

Thanks Everyone

Might not be a carb problem. When an engine is cold any valve misadjustment is worse. Could be the exhaust valve is out of adjustment enuff on compression stroke it's pushing the fuel out and when you put your hand over the exhaust you creat enough back pressure to get it started. Just a thought and could be wrong. Hope that helps, JimW

So what are you teling me to do to fix this Jim? Are you saying that the exhaust may be loose?

I'm saying check the valve clearance. Both intake and exhaust. The exhaust valve could cause your problem but not from being to loose but rather too tight. I think the clearence is suppose to be .004.Jim
