#1
Hello, i'm looking to buy a quad, don't know a whole lot about them tho. I'm looking at a 2003 Grizzly 660 with 5,000 miles on it. it need a throttle and choke trigger. I've talked the guy down to $2100. Is this a good price?

Depending on the complete condition of the bike (Plastics, Tires, Condition of engine) it would seem like a decent deal to me. You can also get more info at http://grizzlyriders.com. Hopefully good luck with the new ride.

Pull the spark plug and see its condition, white is lean, tan is perfect, black is rich. If new plug, be suspicious. Pull all wheels and check condition of brakes, check all axles and hubs for tightness, tight is good; loose is bad. Check CV joint boots for cracks and tears, check steering for alignment and tightness, check engine for blue smoke. Check frame for rust.
If all looks good, and you have extra money for unseen repairs, buy it. Otherwise, put the 2100.00 on a new ride, you'll be happier in the long run.
The money you put into the 2003, you'll never get back, the money you put into a new ride will give you many hours of trouble free riding pleasure.

03' was the year for weaker axles. They changed them for 04' and up. 02' was different design completly.
If your not able to ride it or hear it run, talk him down or walk away. I'd say $1500 max without seat time. There's alot of expensive parts in the clutches and trans.
5000 miles isn't overly excessive but could mean time to rebuild if it was ridden hard.
My 02' only has 2300 miles but it was ridden very hard and I've completly rebuilt it already.

Malachi is right about the 03 axles, they still hold out ok for people who stay with stock sized tires and ride just in a general manner. They will not hold up to over sized tires, and mudding like the 02-04 and up.
That 660 motor is used in the 660 XT motor bike and they get 30,000 miles out of them before rebuild. wounder why in a ATV it would not?

TLC, most ATVs I've got to work on do not get taken care of very well.
Seems the oil will get changed only when something goes wrong 2000 miles after they have bought it new. Alot of times the air filter has never been cleaned either. That's a rough life for any motor.
The cycles see mainly road time and don't have to put up with the filth most ATVs see. So changing the oil and cleaning the filter every 2k miles isn't such a big deal for a road bike.
Had a Kodiak the other day that was missing half the air filter from rodents chewing thru it. I'd say he had been driving it that way for atleast a year because of the dirt build-up in the carb and intake. Valve finally snapped because of it. That's why it finally came into the shop. lol
