I recently inquired about the same issue. I was interested in 28x9 (F) / 28x12 (R) ” BlackWater XTs and was told that they would fit the stock rims. So 26” shouldn’t be a problem at all.
I did purchase the tires, but bought rims at the same time. It’s nice having a spare and not having to deal with the mounting headaches. ATVGEAR.com had the cheapest on the Internet. They include shipping, most places do not and that can tag on an extra $40 – $80. Depending on the weight of the tires.

I had Mudshark 26x9x12 front and 26x12x12 rear on my 95 Kodiak which are the same rim dimension you have and these tires performed great. I put them on myself very easily. They came out far enough to protect the rims but not so far that they threatened to roll the bead under. Hope this helps ya...
