Default 1990 Moto4 250

Hi everyone, i have a question about my 4wheeler. I just bought it yesterday and do not know if it is a 2 cycle or 4 cycle engine. I need to do an oil change on it, but don't know what oil to use. Could someone advise me on this?
thanks!!

cool, thanks! i am going to use 10w30 in it right now. It is blowing out white smoke. I changed out the spark plug, and added some Lucas fuel stabilizer to it, and i am ordering a fuel filter and new coil for it. Im gonna see if the oil change and the spark plug and all fixes the problem.

the 100% sure way to test is to , start it up, if its REALLLLY loud, then its a 2 stroke. if you can talk normally with it running and hear yourself. then a 4 stroke, 4 strokes are always quieter running and idleing. just an idea,

Yeah, its not that loud. So definitely a 4 stroke. Thanks for the advice on that.

So on to my next question. The tailpipe is blowing out white smoke. I just drained the oil and put 10w30 oil in it and put the lucas fuel cleaner in the gas. Changed the spark plug. It is still smoking..and it looks like oil is coming out the tailpipe. Along with alittle bit of water. Not sure what i need to do next. Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated. I definitely can't ride it around the neighborhood

Thanks!

It is a four stroke. The loudness of the machine has little to do with the engine type and a lot more to do with the type of exhaust system on it. AS for the oil, it is best to use a motorcycle specific oil, but anything that does NOT say "energy conserving" in the round seal on the container should be fine. Quite a following out there for people to use the Shell Rotella T diesel oils. I have had good luck with them myself, plus they are cheap and easy to find. The smoking is a sure sign your motor is getting worn, probably time for a top end rebuild and/or valves/seals. Can you not ride it in the neighborhood because of how much it smokes?
