Default Problems with my blaster

I have a 2002 Yamaha Blaster (stock) and today we cleaned the carburetors outside, tomorrow I'm going to take it apart and clean it. But we put a new air filter in today, and I raced my friends trike on it, and it ran fine. I had about a quarter of a tank of gas left, and after cross about...a 3 inch deep river, i lost alot of power going up the hill on the other side, but i got my rpms back up and it ran fine. However, after stopping to let the engine cool, I notice now when I go to kick it, I get a.....almost like its wet, sound from near the kicker, but it starts right up. I also notice when i leave off the throttle, I hear a clanking, only when I leave off the throttle do I hear the clanking. I changed the spark plug, thinking the plug was misfiring or fouled, and I saw a little spot of oil on the bottom of the plug. I am worried to my nerves end about my blaster, It went from running perfect, to horrible. Also, I dont have a air filter cover on, to improve air flow. It also seems to not want to hit the powerband. Near the top of the gears, I get a little burst of power, then its back to normal.

Well, you really shouldn't run through water of any depth without an airbox lid. Water probably splashed onto your filter and drowned out the engine. If you come across any more water, just slow down to a minimum so you don't get a wet filter, or put the lid back on.

As for the clanking, if it happens while the quad is moving, check that your chain is still tight.

Thanks but I figured out why it was doing that. It was bogging out because i was riding it like a 4 stroke after i went through the river. I just gave her hell once i got through the river and she ran fine.

Yeah,... can't just go riding a 2 stroke like a 4 stroke..... They need some RPM's to produce the *** ripping power they have...... climbing out of a river you should be revving pretty good to make contact with the power band.... Glad you have it figured out.... I kinda went through a learning curve with mine too..... I wish they would keep making the 2 strokes.... but I think that's over for now....

Yep..... most any mod to the intake or exhaust on these dudes is a reason to re-jet......

I don't feel comfortable with taking off the air box lid, and not doing some other mods to reduce the possibility of getting water or other stuff in the intake..... 2 strokes don't like that kind of stuff and are less forgiving (in my experience) than a 4 stroke with less than optimum filtration.

I never have been one for asking Drag racing performance from anything I own,.. I tend to gravitate toward skill riding, not power show, so I don't usually make any mods that are not deemed necessary except when doing a top-end or other repair,.... then maybe a little over-sizing.

None of the engines compress water very well, no matter what you try..... so keeping water out is paramount.
