What do you mean here? It will have spark every five revolutions of the crank or every fifth time you try to start it? Check spark with the plug removed.

if its making a spark its not the coil, might be the pickup coil near the stator, but not the ignition coil...

Been a while since I updated on this, but I have finally found time to start playing with it again. Here's where I'm at:
Parts replaced:
Ignition coil
CDI
Starter
Main Switch
Starter Solenoid
Tested the pickup coil resistance and it's right in spec. I've ran the test on the stator about 20 times and everything still checks out fine but yet I still don't have spark. I went over all the wiring and hooked all the switches up to where they need to be. I cleaned all of the contacts in the start button. Still don't have any spark.

Did you ever get this problem fixed? My 87 warrior is doing the same thing. I was riding when it started breaking up realy bad and then shut off with no spark all with in mins. Took home started messing with it was making a god awful sound in the side case, pulled cover off, found that the 3 stator bolts had worked loose and stator started flip flopping around in the flywheel. Got new stator for 87, installed, now only get a spark after holding down the start button and engine is cranking over for a split second when I release the start button I will get a single spark.
