My son put a FMF pipe K&N air filter and jet kit on his grizz now it doesnt have the power it had before. What went wrong? Is the jetting wrong? If so how can you tell other than loss of power?I read somewhere that you could tell by looking at the spark plug that if it wasnt burning white then the jet wasnt right,is this true? The pipe has plates on the back to adjust restriction of exhaust(all plates are on). Also we've never figured out why it sometimes cuts out going up steep hills at full throttle and dont at half throttle.

Just the opposite. The plug porcelain should look tan. When they are lean, they turn white and blister. The cutting out sounds like it is to lean. Check it out soon. It you continue to run it to lean it can burn a hole in a piston or burn a valve.

You didn't say if your plug was burning white, tan, or black. A spark plug is a great indicator of engine tuning with very light tan as the desired color. As Raptorrider said, too lean and the plug will be white and blistered. Too much fuel and it be black and will foul. Also, if you exhaust is too restrictive, you won't clean the burnt gases from the cylinder and the plug will eventually turn black.

From your description of the engine losing power at high rpm, you problem could be too little fuel or too much exhaust restriction. Remove most of the restrictor plates from the new pipe and give it a few runs (start with a fresh spark plug). If it still doesn't run right, check the color of the plug and adjust the fuel delivery as necessary.

John2001grizzly, took old plug out and it was black installed new one rode a short piece took it out and it was also black. The FMF pipe has the restrictor plates on the outside, when they are all on it is wide open isnt it? Tomorrow we are going to clean air filter and adjust air fuel mixture.

I have a 2001 Grizzly. Every since I've had it when I go up a steep hill it gags. Sometimes it even dies, I have never done anything to to make it run faster or for more power.Saturday when I was riding it died going up a 45* hill, when we pushed it down to the flat creek bottom we could see raw gas floating in the water.
any Ideas?????

packrat,

to get a truely accurate reading of the plug (for jetting) you need to install the new plug, then run the bike up to and at about 3/4 throttle for a few moments and reach over and hit the kill switch while you are still at 3/4 throttle. then stop the bike, pull the plug, and get your accurate reading. you could be running a lean jetting, but then once you bring it back down to idle its running a little rich and making the plug black.

Dakota, this grizz run fine for about 8 months then it started cutting out going up steep hills but on level it ran fine. He put a FMF pipe, K&n airfilter, and jet kit in and it lost power on level ground and still cut out on hills. I dont think the add ons have anything to do with the engine cutting out.Today it was missing and cutting out any time it was full throttle and on hills the engine would quit.If you find your problem let me know.

Hey,
Grizz owners,
How do you adjust the fuel, air mixture, etc. on a grizzly?

mudflap,in the front of the carb on the bottom there is a screw up inside of a hole. You cant see it unless carb is off but you can get to it with a small straight screwdriver.
