If I was you, I would get the KFX400. Great quad for trail riding and screwing around.
If I was in an open area and going WOT all the time and did not care about my medical bills I would get the 450.![Wink](https://atvconnection.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)
I would not even think about the 250.
The Z400 is another great quad for what you want to do.
Have fun!!

300ex is a great quad. They are very reliable and great for trails. With that said, they just aren't that fast. If you just want to cruise around trails they are great for that, but i have a feeling you if you go with one you will be wanting more power. They are similar in speed to the 250 class, and probably a machine you will grow out of/tired of quickly at your age. If the 400 class machines are out of your price range, the 300ex is a great choice.
To the guy who posted about in MA being 16 to ride anything over 90cc, wow that's crazy. I was riding a 90cc at 7, to be 16 on one of those is just asinine. Heck the posted age on my 90 was no one under 12, and i was already on to something bigger by then let alone 16.

I agree w/ the 400 class machines. The KFX/LTZ400 is a great choice.
FYI: I'm 5'10 and #250 and is I'm going on a ride to just cruise, I leave my 250R home and take my 300ex.
The 450's are not out of the question tho. With dirtbike expierience, you may want to look at that option.
Go to quadzone.com and look in their classifieds. MANY high dollar, low hour machines are for sale CHEAP! You'll be suprised. example: my buddy got a TRX450R with a cpl hours on it, $1500+ in goodies, for $4800. The story was that a guy won it and didn't like riding so sold it.
Have fun and be safe.![Smile](https://atvconnection.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
Laws:: the sticker guidelines are factory imposed for liability reasons.
Truth is, most every state has it's own guidelines (and you won't like em). LOL
The ATVA and ATV Safety Institute came up with a more common sence guideline for size of rider and machine size rather than a imperfect age scale.
Basically ~ rider sitting with feet on the pegs and knees bent. Can reach the bars with elbows bent and fingers can easily reach and work the controls.
The ATVA has a 13-15 yr old 250/300cc class.

you cant go wrong with any of the 400cc class quads for trail riding. personally i would go with a 400 ex, some may disagree just because its air cooled. but its a tried an true reliable motor. Honda hasnt changed it much in over ten years, and coming from a former owner of one they can take quite a beating. With the ex's you can pick them up for a great price an just about find them anywhere. you also wont need to worry so much about maintenance on a 400 as you would be with a 450.
