Jaster-I didn't know ATVs had coil packs or at least atvs this old where would it be?
And Steven- what clip are you talking about that is too high?
and TLC-Ive heard about the gas cap vent before and have tried running without a gas cap, it didnt change anything. Ive had a Cert. motorcycle mechanic look at it and he said it's not the carb, everything in the carb is ok he said but im still not ruling it out so ill take everything into consideration

so I will-
*Replace the pilot jet
*check the needle
*check choke/throttle operations
*check timing (Do I need A timing light to do so?)
Also, The throttle needle and black plastic tube thing (not sure what its called) look okay. when the throttle is down all the way, theres still a normal 3/8"ish gap to allow fuel and air through. I'll See if I can post some pictures later maybe that will give you guys a better idea of what im working with. I think if the timing was off it would have trouble running at a higher RPM as well? I can get it up to 5th gear and cruise 35-40MPH just fine

Hey Raptor450, if you had a service manual that would be helpful, Ive been looking for one online but everyone wants like 75$ and sites dont look trustworthy
If you do find time to look its a YTM225DX fairly certain its a 1984 but i think 83-86 are all the same

coil, ignition coil as TLC suggested. follow the spark plug wire back to it. heck, check any other "black box" with wires coming out of it. we ain't ruling nothing out.
i think your timing is correct or it wouldn't run or it'd be backfiring like a sonofagun.
my wife reminded me that we had a suzuki LT125 that had the dying down like your quad and she remembered i changed out the ignition coil. wow, back then that was a chunk of money!

Me thinks you need a manual.
Of course you need to check the valves, but I think it may be a wore out piston/rings.
IMO:: heat up and die= compression loss or electrical.

Check like multimeter check? Or someone above mentioned temputeure, I guess that useless laser thermometer I bought from ky buddys garage sale would come in handy. I am taking it to the yamaha dealer tomorroe before work the guy said he'd look at it but im not lazy, ill do all my own work (thats the only way to learn) will notnlet him talk me into servicing it for some outragous price (but I know everyones gotta make a living) I guess buying parts from them instead of ebay helps keep the paychecks comin lol

i think your ignition coil is failing. it is overheating and "tripping out". next time you fire up your machine, put your hand on it or a temp gun and watch it. i'll bet it is heating up until it obviously overheats and trips.

wow, i'm out on a limb here without a safety net or the machine near where i could watch it

Well, I would if I could start it up. I don't wanna waste money and buy an ignition coil to see if that's it in case that's not it. I may check the timing but if it was off I don't see how the problem could be worsening. It doesn't seem like it will ever start, I can charge the vattery and turn her over for30 seconds with out hearing a single firing. Its gotta be something electrical though. The previous owner told me that his previous owner kept it outside (after I purchased it) and being an 84 electrical parts won't last long with freezing winters and boiling humid summers up here in MO
