Does the engine turn over with the starter or just the starter only turns? If so could be a starter clutch problem.Dirt Cheap Yamaha, Honda, Arctic Cat & Polaris OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse

First check you have the right starter. I once fitted the wrong brush kit to a starter and it ran backwards. The gear or spline on the shaft could also be wrong so check it against the old one.

Then I'd check into the starter clutch area on the link I posted. Could be as simple as an idler gear problem if not the sprague clutch itself.Dirt Cheap Yamaha, Honda, Arctic Cat & Polaris OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse

i found out my problem and it was that 2 of the 3 bolts that hold the starter clutch on the rotor i guess had sheared off somehow and i was able to get the ends of the bolts off with a magnet by turning it and then pliers. Check if this is your problem too because it may save you a bunch of money and ive heard that the 01-03 raptor 660s have the same problem. good luck
