Default 2006 wolverine 450 - roll ATV to light up display/turn over?

2006 wolverine ATV - new to me. the guy told me i might have an issue where i turn on the key and then i have to roll the quad forward or backwards in order to start it.

i experienced this shortly after buying it. it doesnt matter if its in park, neutral or reverse it still does the same thing.. cycling the battery doesnt change it.. turning the key on and off doesnt change it... rocking the bike side to side and jumping up and down on it doesnt change it.. only thing that works when the display isn't lit is when you roll the bike forward OR backward.. otherwise it won't start..

the only times it has done this are AFTER the bike is sitting and cold... i haven't noticed this on the trails.. yet..

im guessing some type of sensor could be the issue?

I think that is common on a lot of quads. My Renegade I have to rock it back and forth to get it in to park before it will start. I also had to do that with my Vinson. If it really bothers you try to adjust you shift cable so it goes in to park better. Try starting it in neutral or with the hand brake pulled.

Any bike that has a shift drum with a star wheel on the end, can need the bike to be moving to drop in (or out) of gear properly. If the pickup for the gear change light is on the end of the shift drum, it won't contact until the shift drum has rotated completely.

Belt drive Yams can have dirty contacts on the shift drum and this can lead to the lights not coming on every time, but if it always lights up after rocking backwards/forwards, this is normal.

I'm experiencing this a bit and sometimes it's worse than other times. How do I make sure that the contacts are clean so I at least give it the best opportunity to operate well? I've got a 2005 Kodiak 450 4x4.

Only done this on a Yam 550 but the contacts were a spring loaded plunger on the end of the shift drum. A circular angle sensor is held against it by a couple of bolts. You could just see it behind the back upper part of the belt box. A pig to get at, but easy to clean once removed.

I've got the same year Kodiak and mine was corrected by playing with and adjusting the linkage rod under the left cover panel.

When you adjust that bar, how do you know which direction to adjust it? Or did you just adjust it and see how it works, adjust again and try it, etc?
