Default yamaha timberwolf

I'm scratching my head, never seen this before..... timberwolf has a forward/reverse shifter and gear shifter, I bought a used wheeler and after putting a rearend in it I moved the shift lever forward but found it was reverse and I could shift through all 5 gears in reverse so I moved the shift lever backward and it went forward but only has first gear..... so I adjusted the linkage to where I could turn it around and now forward is forward but still only has 1st gear backward is reverse and now it only has 1 gear, does anyone know what's going on?

Wouldn't think it possible, but diff fitted upside down? Have known someone try to fit a late Honda 350 rear axle to a Honda 300 and this is what you get, as the pinion is on the opposite side of the crownwheel. Surprisingly, they then did fit the diff upside down to make it work, and it did.
