Default Front differential 1999 Yamaha Kodiak 400 4x4

Does the front differential take gear oil or transmission fluid or what have you, the oil filter has 2 hoses that run off of it and it goes to the front of the bike. I can't see where it goes from there but I don't know if the engines oil runs as the diff oil? Am I correct

Those two hoses will go to an oil cooler. I always use 90s gear oil in the diff. A while since I did one but there is a filler cap on the side of the diff. Not sure if there is a level plug below it, or if you fill to the filler hole. I seem to remember an inordinately long level plug, though that could be a Big Bear or Bruin.

I thought that there was but I was just curious because I changed the oil filter last night and noticed where the hoses go and wasn't sure, when I changed the CV axle the gear oil came out of the front as it would. So it was jacked up but a fair amount came out so I don't want to run the risk as to not having gear oil
