Default 86 yamaha yfm80 badger starter

86 yamaha yfm80 starter wont disengage. ive tried several things. Unhooking ground wire to starter, unhooking wite from start to starter solinoid, light knocking on starter, light knocking on where starter enters engine. It wont disengage. When i give it throttle it dies. Brand new starter. Removed starter from engine wired it up and hit the start button the shaft doesnt move in or out just spins. Tried to pull it wont budge. So is it supposed to stay engaged?

On 95% of quads the starter gear is fixed to the armature and just goes round with it. The starter gear drives a one way clutch behind the flywheel when powered up. When the starter is not powered, the engine runs but the one way clutch slips round leaving the gear(s) and starter alone. Why do you think the starter is still turning once the engine is running and starter wire disconnected?
