valve job? (with vid)
hi all I picked up warrior for 1500 month or 2 ago when I bought it buddy said it would likely need valves soon Ive put about 10hrs on it since seems to be running well very minimal smoke on start up but tapping and small amount of oil leaking seems to be getting worse comming from exhaust valve cover anyways I havent seen alot of recent posts covering how much it would cost for yamaha dealer to do the valves and also wondering if somone whos never done this before but is pretty mechically confident would be okay doing them for the first time and sorry last comment is I wanna leave a video of the sound and leak to see if you guys also think it is likly the valves? honestly sounds like a bag of bolts at this point I'm a little nervous let me know whats you guys think please hoping its the valves and I can hold of doing them till winter ride abit longer

First thing is adjust clearances and fit a new gasket to cover when you put it back. Cam noise is usually excessive clearance, or worn cam or followers, not the valves themselves. Occasionally can be a loose valve seat. Difficult to tell from the video, but it doesn't sound all that bad. Piston slap can also make noise, especially at idle, but that does sound like cam noise.

okay thanks again for the reply man that sounds good was thinking about doing the valve clearances and checking cam chain tension this weekend So hopfully that helps ill order a new gasket too cover too hopfully it doesnt sound too bad I dont know much about it sounded loud to me but Ive read couple posts saying these engines are kinda loud too and also its an 87 really hoping I can put another 10-15 hrs on it before taking head off and doing a valve job this winter

so starting taking stuff off to do the valve clearances tonight chain cam chain tension seems good but I noticed that cam gear seems to 180 out on the time as in its at 6 oclock when i turn the crank shaft over so the T is at the top could that be causing ticking or other issues? havent taken valve covers off yet doing that tommorw wanted to look into this cam alignment first

Cam sprocket has to be at timing mark when you check valves, T mark on flywheel is lined up at TDC which happens at the top of exhaust stroke as well as the top of compression stroke. Turn crank round by 1 rev and all will be well. With regards to valve seals, yes they will need doing if leaking oil, but no big rush as long as you check oil level regularly and are not getting plug fouling. Don't know the Warrior, but some Yams have the breather pipe above the air filter in the airbox. Oil fumes condense in the pipe when stopped, run down and drip onto the filter, then get sucked in and burnt when you start the engine, so puff of smoke on startup.

yeah okay I misunderstood that part abit no issues valves were a little loose .0024 on exhuast and .0013 on intake tightened them up and sounds pretty much the same still maybe a little bit better I have heard some people say these things especially the older ones can run a little loud maybe thats all it is? it is an 87 after it smoked more then Ive ever seen on first start too but seems to have all burned off after couple minutes and didnt smoke the 2nd start and yeah been watching the oil levels they dont drop much ive maybe had to had 150-200 ml oil since I've got it
