Picked up a non running 05 Kodiak 450. Got it running and it has no oil pressure. None to the oil pressure check bolt at the head. The oil filter it literally dry. I pulled the oil strainer bolt only to find the strainer and spring to be missing. Is it necessary to have the strainer and spring in there to have oil pressure or is the pump bad?

 

Fairly sure all the spring does is keep the strainer in place. However the engine will fairly soon seize if run without oil pressure, OHC engines seize on the camshaft. Just done a Suzuki 450KQ run short of oil and wrecked head, cam and followers. Fit a new oil pump and dismantle the old one to find out what was wrong, blow out the galleries going to it, fit a strainer and spring, then hope it hasn't already wrecked the cam.
