Default Help with 1998 350 4x4 tranny/clutch

Hi All,

New to atv world with an older bike. Purchased 1998 Big Bear 350 4x4. Engine starts and runs well, my only "issue", is that it seems to slip/chatter when I change gears at higher speeds. At low speeds it engages fine. When it does slip/chatter the gear leaver bounces until it engages. This happens very quickly, within a sec I would say. I am trying to determine if I need a new clutch or tranny.

Thanks
Eric

You are going to have to take a look inside the clutch case anyway. Take the cover off and check the multiplate clutch, could be warped plates or linings coming off. Check thickness as well, if worn right down, fit new plates anyway. Other slight possibility is the star wheel loose on the end of the shift drum. On Yams this wears something, must be 10 years since I did one, but think it was the hole for the dowel, yam dealer said to take up the wear with one of those "epoxy fillers". I did so and the bike never came back, so assume it was cured.
