On a ride today, I noticed some clanging sound in the front end. I checked it out and there was oil all over the A-arm etc. At first I thought it was the differential or the brakes. I then noticed that the SHOCK had completely broken off the lower mount. It broke clean through the metal where it attaches to the mount. The metal looks very thin and not much there as it was a clean break through the metal. The part where it attaches to the A-arm/bolt is still there. It was an average, uneventful ride for about 20 minutes. I figure they'll think I did it but I wasn't even riding hard at all. I think it's a defect but my bikes about a year old. I was able to prop the shock behind the mounting bracket on the A-arm and limp home. Luckily, I was only a couple of miles from home. It seems it could have been dangerous in the wrong situation too.
The dealer/Yamaha should stand behind this and will check tomorrow. At least they may give me one at cost, which is probably high ?? It looks fairly easy to install but have never tried before. Anyone have this happen or what?? Thanks...

That sucks. Please let us know what the dealer says when you take it in.

Sorry that this happen to you, As far as a dealer standing by their product that they sell, my dealer is giving me at 10% below cost of a new 2/ 4X4 switch to replace the one on my 2000 kodiak that I bought last year on May 8th. I've been teh first one of a Kodiak or Grizz owner has had a switch go bad. I did clean up the switch button and it works most of the time. Good luck on your shock replacement.

I spoke w/ the dealer and he sounded pretty receptive of it being a defective shock. He said Yamaha may cover it as a customer relations effort. He said usually if you have a broken shock you have a bent /broken wheel, A-arm etc., but not just a broken shock. He said he has never seen one break to where the oil comes out of the shock. I'm taking it tomorrow and he's going to call Yamaha. He knows I don't trash my bikes due to my trades there, so maybe he'll hook me up. Otherwise it's $100.00 for a shock. Ouch!!

Well, score one for Yamaha (kinda). They will cover the shock which costs $150.00. Not bad for a 1.4 year old bike w/ a 6 mo. warranty. They said it must have been a defective shock as nothing else was bent/broken. The bad news is the part will take 2-3 weeks to come in. I now see what people are talking about when it comes to Yamaha parts availability.
