Timberwolf Carb Settings
#1
Hello everyone,
I nearly have my completely rebuilt '94 Timberwolf running perfect; I have one last little issue to resolve. I think I know the answer but wanted to confirm by posting my question. I set the carb idle mixture screw to factory specs after completely rebuilding it and giving it an ultrasonic cleaner bath but I believe it's a little rich for my setup. When the bike is cold, I need to give it a little throttle to start. My thoughts are that by applying throttle I'm lifting the carb slide allowing more air in - needed because there is too much fuel. The electrode of my plug is coffee color but the base is rather sooty; further confirming what I suspect is a rich mixture. Am I correct to assume I need to turn the idle mixture screw in a little? Once running the bike seems to run pretty well.

Almost all engines with carbs need throttle when starting, it is fuel injected engines that don't. I would leave alone if it runs right. In theory, setting the idle mixture screw to the max revs it runs at when idling, is correct. In practice I find this tends to cause a splutter when you open the throttle quickly, so need to set it a bit rich to cure this.

Certainly! It seems adjusting the idle mixture screw is the right step. Make a gradual clockwise turn, monitor the spark plug color, and ensure a smooth throttle response.
