first off, im at 2000 to 2500 ft. and put on toomey t5s, w/their jet kit.

put in 280mains, their needles on 4th clip, 1 1/2 turns out.

when i try and get on the pipe, in the powerband, it just studders kind of and doesnt rev out at all. i tried 2 turns out on the air screw nd that helped but still not enough.

is it running too rich?

should i try the 270s?

what should i adjust to make it run right?
thanks for your help, brent.

Hard to say...

Have you looked at the plugs..
put a fresh set in.. run it for a 10 mins or so.
Dark Black = rich
Chocolate to grey = right
light grey to white = lean

I have the feeling your rich, but the plugs are the only way to really tell...

remember... lean is mean (more power) too lean = hot, hot = burnt pistons

I'd say to go with the 170s. Also, you didn't say if the needle clip was 4th slot from top or bottom. If you are measuring from the top, I'd drop your needle down (raise clip) 1 notch so that the gas isn't coming on as fast when you raise the slide.

It shouldn't take more than 20 minutes to try it. Let us know how it turns out. Remember -- watch those plugs! It could rev out really good just before you melt it down if your running too lean.

It does sound like you're running rich but as was mentioned check your plugs to be sure. Also, maybe you're on the wrong needle clip; I have the toomeys and jet kit as well and the instructions tell you how to count (up or down) for the needle clip. One thing that the Toomey manual seemed to stress is that if it's not runnign right then it's NOT the jetting. I wouldn't mess with the air screw as that should have no effect on the power band as you stated which I assume to mean higher revs. I guess it's revving but near the top it stutters from your description. You can try a smaller jet like a 270 but anything lower than that and you can almost be sure it's not your jets that are causing the problem. I run 270s at 5000 feet and 260s at 8000 feet which is probably 1 notch richer than needed and it doesn't stutter or anything like that.

When you figure it out please let the rest of us know so we can learn from your experience.

i put in the 270's today and put the air screw back to 1 and a 1/2. i counted down from the top (the part that isnt pointy) and put it on the 4th down.

runs a lot better. pulls harder and revs all the way out.

it just hesitates alittle when you get start getting into the powerband.

im going out now to try 1.75 out on the air screw and 2 turns out.

ill tell you how it works... so far i havent got out a 1st gear so i dont know how much faster than stock it is.

thanks for your help

still doesnt run right, doesnt rev out as far as it can, it kind of stutters.

what would raising the needle a 1/2 do?

it needs to be leaner.

i sent toomey and email.

thanks

Yea, I would stay with the 270 jets and move the needles DOWN 1 full notch and see how that does. You don't want to raise the needles you want LOWER the needles to make it leaner. By move the needles DOWN I mean so there is more of the pointy end showing below the slide and less of the grooved end showing above the slide. This will lean it out on top, at least from 1/4 to 3/4 throttle (I forget exactly). Somebody step in if I got that part wrong.

Don't go with anything less than the 270 jet or you will be lean one way or another.

Ah... It's so nice to be in agreement.

WyoRider is directing you to do the same thing that I said to do in my original reply. It sounds like you are getting just a tad more gas than you can handle right before it starts building power since going to the 170 helped on top.

You really need to get it into some higher gears when testing. A load on the engine can make a big difference. What I mean is that you might be able to get away with less than perfect jetting in a low gear. This is because in a low gear the engine doesn't need as much power to pull it through the full RPM range, but when you go to a higher gear, you'll need the engine to be making good power to do so.

Keep us posted and keep a CLOSE eye on the plugs.

alright thanks a lot!

here is what i will do tomorrow:

lower the needle, but first i will try not lowering it 1 whole clip, i will lower it that 1clip but then put under the needle a provided washer that is a small spacer so actually i will be only moving down a 1/2 of a clip. if this has no result i will try 1 full move. if it does work with the 1/2 a clip move, i may try going with the 280 mains again, just so im not on the lean side. but i doubt they will work, and will load it up to much and it will not be able to handle that much.

i will post tomorrow when i am finished, should take me a good hour and a half since those cables are hard for me to get back on, it is such a pain to put them in. have any tricks to solve putting the cable on the slide easier?

thanks again,
talk to you tomorrow
