Again you are getting good advice the first time.
I would only add that it is a prime time to change the gear oil in both diffs. You just bought this bear used, correct? Who knows when it has last been changed. When I got mine, I didn't know squat about quads. Got into the forums and picked up enough info to run with. Reccomended start list as refered to me.
Oil & Filter change
Air filter change (Unless looks new and is oiled well. (Air box screw was stripped on mine for who knows how long. Filter was a mess)
Front and rear diffs. (Drain plugs are hidden by skid plates and clean around any plug really well before removing)
New Spark plug.
Check brake shoes and cables.
Good luck,
Tim

Don't ya just love it when great minds think alike? I do have the shop manual for the '99 4x4 if you should run into something really weird. I could bring it to work and fax you info you needed. Pick up a plug at the dealer and see what size socket fits it while you are there, I cannot remember but someone on here might..

Made it home about 10 pm and never thought of the plug. My bad.
Called the local dealer here this morning and told the head of his shop I was calling from Yamaha to check the basic proficiancy of his crew. After he finished laughing he said it was an 18mm and thanked me for brightening his morning.
Hope he was right....

Tomorrow i am going to change the large(rear) boot.
Here's what the dealer said to do:
1)remove dust cover
2)remove nut
3)remove the cylinder shape object
4)repeat on other side of swing arm.
5)remove shock at bottom.
6)loosen boot collars(2).
The last part he described was to pull back rear end.
now here's where i got lost, where doe's the opening to put the new boot come from, i mean is there a spline at the front of boot that pulls out of the case when you pull back the rear end or is the opening(to slide boot over) somewhere else?.
Any thing i should be carefull of while doing this?
P.s. i'll get a 18mm plug socket at the dealer i guess

18mm is it.
Looked at the manual for replacing that boot and it appears that the shaft slides out with the rear end disassembly that has to happen first. From what I see, this looks like a major undertaking. Safe to assume the boot has a tear in it? If you go to Ronnies.com there is a section with exploded views of the Yamahas. You may want to look at these for a while before taking things apart to this level.
Good luck,
Tim
