Tire Size for Banshee....
#1
Hey Guys,
I am running the stock 20" tires on my Banshee. My friend runs 22"ers on his. What do you guys recommend? I ride tight trails, open trails, roads, fields, mud, snow...basically everything but sand. The extra ground clearance would be nice, but what do you guys think? Thanks for the help.

That's a good idea. I have another question too though. If I was to leave stock gearing, and put 22's on the back, would that give me more top end, or would the quad not be able to turn them at max rpm in 6th gear anyway?
Thanks,

Pirahna, First of all, congrats on you Banshee... There's a certain pride that goes along with owning one.
Anyway, I would say go for the 22" tires, something with a flat profile like Razrs. You can get a smaller front sprocket (13t) to keep the gearing close or even drop to a 12t to go lower than stock overall. It depends on your riding. If you are looking for top speed on open areas I would stick with the stock gearing and see if it will pull full RPMs in 6th gear. Once you put some pipes on there you will definately pull 6th gear with stock gearing and 22" tires. That will put you into the upper 80's MPH range; at least 85 I'm sure. I still have the 20" stock tires but just ordered a 15t front sprocket because I rev out too easy in 6th gear when riding on the roads (legal here). With the stock gearing and tires I can run 82 MPH. Hope this helps.

Ah, Duner you are a genius. Once again you have the answer .
Yup, have no choice but to get the 22"s...I went riding last night and I was getting hung up everywhere. For the most part, I could find alternate routes around the stuff I was bottoming out on, but some places were so tight I couldn't go around, and I would get hung up. Plus the tires are the stock ones that look like they are made for nothing but hard pack roads, so that didn't help.
I was thinking of getting the 22" Maxxis Sur-Traks...what do you think? I want something that will wear good, but yet provide a lot of traction. My friend always goes with the Wooley Booger type tires...maybe I should just get them. You're right...I'm full of questions.
Thanks again for the help.

Oh, and one other thing...
<< I still have the 20" stock tires but just ordered a 15t front sprocket because I rev out too easy in 6th gear when riding on the roads (legal here). >>
Haha...Riding may be legal there, but is "topping out in 6th gear"...lol

My buddy has his banshee setup for deep woods riding. He runs 22" holeshots on a 8" rim. He runs 14/42 gearing. Dropping a tooth on the front equates to loosing 2.5 teeth on the back. Through our experience 1 tooth added on the back is just fine for 22" tires. He aslo runs boysen reeds, pro-flo intake, and fmf gnarly pipes. It runs great in the woods.

Don't get Sur Traks...first they look ugly on a shee, and second, if they grip as much as my Bearclaws...you'll be spinning averywhere (espcially lateral grip). I'm getting rid of the bulky Bearclaws for some 18" holeshot MX, even for trail riding...gotta go extreme!
I'd say you should rather go for 22" Razors...Holeshots wear fast...at least that's what I've heard...but for god's sake get knobby tires!!! Bearclaws are soo loose everywhere, so unprecise...the difference stroke me when I tested Xplor's 20" holeshots...WOW! more rigid, more side bite, more grip...more.
It will definitely pull 6th gear top rpm (22+" and stock gearing or me)...it can even pull a 16 front with 22" (although I haven't ridden this kind of combo)
If you want to keep the stock gearing with 22 inchers...you should have a 12.7 teeth sprocket...get a 13 and you're slightly faster, or get a 12 and you're winding more...

Are the Razors good in the Mud? I need a tire that is good in the mud, and trails. I ride hard pack the least, so I can deal with a tire that isn't quite as great in that catagory.
I was going to ask you how your bearclaws went, because the Sur traks are pretty close the the same thing right? How do they perform in the mud...are they as bad there?
Oh, I will also be riding in the snow (sometimes the sled is a pain in the @ss to haul).
Have you tried Dirt Devils?
I've never run any of those tires, so any help is appreciated.
Thanks Zorro.

Well I've heard holeshots wear out fast. But my friends have done ok so far. And he rides the **** out of it. I run bandits myself. They seam to be a good all around tire. They are awesome in the mud. Best A/T tire I've ever tried in the mud.
