hi,

i have a problem with my 1998 big bear. the from diff is leaking oil so i need to take the drive shaft out between the engine and the front wheel drive. maybe this isn't ultimately necessary in fixing my problem but i still need to know how to do it. i bought the bike second-hand and didn't get any manuals with it, so i'd appreciate any help you could give me.

thanks,

Dave.

You have to unbolt the diff and move it forward.I had to do this myself to change pinion&side bearings. It is a pain in the backside.

well, i;ve dne that but i still need to get the drive shaft out of the engine because its all corroded and crappy and needs to be cleaned up. there is a nut that bolts the universal joint to the engine, and i'm wondering if i have to take that off to remove the drive shaft or if there is a simpler way?

thanks again,

Dave.

The shaft itself should slide out of the yolk.If you want or need to take the yolk also, you'll have to remove the universal. There are clips on the insides of the cups, take them off then, using a punch, push the caps through, remove that one then spin and do the same for the opposite one. Then you should be able to remove it.
