If i turn the air/fuel mixture screws clockwise(tightening)does it make it richer or leaner?

I was wondering if anyone had noticed how far the pin on the end of the air/fuel mixture screws actually sticks up thru the carburetor when screwed all the way in. On one of my carburetors the pin sticks up about 1/16" the other is flush, I don't know which one is right. I would appreciate any input!!!!!!!
