Does anyone have any info on the 2002 Raptor tranny yet?

Wondering how many pieces are different? If the axles are the same, wondering if we can get just a couple new gears or if everything has to be replaced? I would really have hoped that yamaha didn't change anything in the cases.. (doubtful)

I would seriously consider dumping $200 to $500 to upgrade to 2002 gears if it was possible.. Splitting the cases and installing the gears wouldn't be a bad over the winter project.. ya know? A maybe a new cam and piston while I was in there

Brad,

Although you and I disagree on things, my contacts at Yamaha said they will not have part numbers till very late Sept or October. All that they know from Japan is that 1,2,3 and reverse are changed and that the cost for the needed gears to update to a 2002 may be near $1200.00. As soon as I have ## and prices, I will post.

I have found that undercutting the gears keeps things together. Also, I think for sand open riding, the wide ratio gears are great if you have the hp to keep things going. Try Bikeworx for the undercutting.

Raptor720,

Thanks for the info... It wouldn't suprise me if they just changed the 4 gears like you said, but I have a hard time with the numbers. I went and took a look at www.troy-racing.com , every gear, the trans axels, all the spacers and washers, I mean every component in the trans only worked out to be around $784.37. If it's just the 4 gears that we'd need the price works out to be around 175.00. Now thats using 2001 pricing, but I can't see it being that different that 2002 pricing.

None of those prices include labor, shift forks, just all the gears on the tranny axles, spacers, collars, axles themselves etc.

I want to do something preventive this winter before I scatter the entire tranny.

I agree with you the gearing in 2001 might be better, I'm more worried about durability and stregth. I will look into getting 2001 gears cut, thanks for the info.. but do you have a number of site for bikeworxs?

see, we don't disagree on anything but trinity (well that and maybe pricing of the gears) ;o)

Later
Brad

I suspect the pricing was what they expected (after) a trans went South. I also looked up the parts at Troy and could not figure out the pricing.
I think Yahama really does not know how to handle the problem. They can't just come out and say they blew it with such a large installed user base.

Anyway, Bikeworx is 978 897 0044 for the gear cutting work. I did the trans myself following work on a MZ 2 wheeler. So far, with the 720, I have not had a problem.

I have heard $1200 in parts and labor for a blown trans.. that one I can believe, and that sounds like a pretty sound guess from what I've seen.

Seems like it be well worth spending $200 fix the gear problem prior to scattering the tranny.

So do you have your gears cut? or are you running stockers? I'm not overly worried about this issue, but if I'm going to take apart the motor this winter to put in a higher comp piston and cam, then I might as well split the cases and fix what I can in the gears.

When I ran the 102 I did not do the gears. When I stepped up to the 105, I needed to change the cylinder sleeve and bore the case flange. While I had it apart, I back cut the gears myself. I also made a different shift dog but have not tried it yet. Lucky I did, I could see that I was about to have a failure. I guess my problem is that with the power of the 105, I have no need to downshift on a hill and actually like no needing to shift like a Banshee (I am over the 2 stroke thing). At Olds in Glamis, the 105 can pull and rev out in 4th. The 102 could only pull 2nd (it could do 3rd but it would not accelerate). Stock and stock with a pipe -- well, thate is where the new trans gears would help.
