Black smoke from exhaust..?
#1
I have a 97 warrior w/supertrapp exhaust. When I punch the throttle a puff of black smoke comes out.It doesnt seem to be burned oil because that would be blue.??It only happens when I punch the throttle. It seems to be running great except for an occasional backfire when I get off the gas at top speeds. Its run like this for quite some time now.My exhaust does not have any sort of packing.Should it??A bit of black smoke ok??

This usually indicates that you are running rich. Check the spark plug color, if its black then you are too rich. Try removing the air box lid and retest for the black smoke. If its gone then you can either go to a lower main jet or just leave the air box lid off. If the color of the plug is tan to light brown then just ride it like you stole it and not worry about the smoke.

Black smoke is an indicator of the bike running rich, check the plug if its jet black its rich if its tan or brown its spot on.However when a 4stroke pops or back fires thats a lean condition, maybe your running rich and then its going lean on the top end, which would mean I believe is a bigger mainjet is needed for midrange thru top end specially if ya did any kind of engine/pipe carb /cam mods jetting from stock changes then since your changing the engines requirment for fuel and air.If the engine is detonating then ya need higher octanne requirment hope that helps. If the plug is black like carbon black id take the airbox lid off put in a new plug or clean plug good and check it again,if thats not tan and still black open up the carb and get a manual and jet kit,if the porcelain is white white or grey its excessively lean and ya need to jet up or rich, bigger jets = more fuel and air smaller = less.Well hope this helps.
