You need a special tool or you will cause major damage. Usually cold start problems are a result of worn piston rings, the choke tube being loose between the two carbs, bad spark plugs, bad gas or?

Before working on the stator, it's more likely that your cold start tune is off, or you have low compression. Easiest-Check the spark with a plug gapped slightly wide, it should still have a strong spark in a wide plug, ( inside the motor smaller gaps are nessessary.) Weak or no spark, diagnose, fix-maybe it is the stator. Next harder, check compression, use a guage to make sure it's in spec for both cylynders, if not, it's gonna need a top end sooner or later anyhow. Third, you have spark and compression, it can ONLY be the gas and/or mixture. Find the error in tuning in one or both carbs.
