Hey I was just wondering if anyone know if it's alright to run regular oil throw our bikes? I just cant figure out why pay $7.98 a quart for yamaha lube 20X40 when you can get castrol 20x40 racing oil for $1.98 and run it throw it. Or can you not run that throw our bikes????

Personally, I do not run automotive oils through my quad or motorcycle. Both have wet clutches. Good motorcycle specific oil is pretty cheap insurance. Amsoil, Golden Spectro, Mobile also makes a motorcycle only oil. There are others. You can probably get a pretty good deal by shopping online and buying by the case.

Do a search on this topic. Their was a post not long ago on this and there have been many others as well. I run Automotive oil in all my quads and have never had a problem. From the post and what I remember, it mentioned that their are a (small) few Automotive oils that contain certain additives that don't work well, but again only a small few. Anyway do a search on this topic as it has been well discussed.

if you do run car oil, look for energy consevering 2 on the back label. thats what you do not want. when i owned a big bear 2 years ago i called my local dealer he said the only car oil he recomened was castrol 10/40 . he owned yamaha delearshp for over 20 years .

I am sure someone will disagree with me but here is what I have found out to be true after I have done months of research on this topic for not only my atv's but my truck as well. Automobile engine oils have friction modifiers that can make a wet clutch slip. These friction modifiers also can cause an oil to foam in a transmission. Automatics are not effected by this, its the machines with a semi auto clutch thats bathed in oil that could make it slip. The ONLY difference between synthetic and dino oil is the molecules in synthetics are perfectly round. No imperfections in the molecular structure. Its a myth that you cant break in an engine with synthetics just may take longer. Its also a myth that you cant change to it after say 100k miles. Nor is it true you cant go back to conventional oil after using synthetic. Allot of high end sports cars (viper corvette etc) come with synthetics from the factory. According to mobil the difference between their synthetic motorcycle oil and mobil one automobile oil is the amount of polymers (friction modifiers)less in the motorcycle oil, less foaming. In a lab there is not enough friction in an automatic type atv tranny to cause significant foaming.

Autoworld weekly had a great article on this awhile back which included engineers from Mobil and GM dispelling the common misunderstandings of oils.

Bottom line is as long as you dont have a semi auto tranny or manual (5speed and manual 5 speed)
run what you want as long as you change your oil on regular intervals. As for what I am running?

In my Prairie I am runing Mobil 1 motorcycle 10w-40 synthetic and my kodiak, Pennzoil with pennzane 10-w30 synthetic. Truck mobil 1 10w-30synthetic.
Probably al for just peace of mind

Kawi chem oil is manufactured by mobil.

Hope this helps,

I know running Mobil 1 in a car gives me better fuel economy and the engine physically runs smoother. I say for the small amounts that a quad uses go with the Mobil 1 motorcycle synthetic, its worth the extra couple bucks.

Order your Yamalube from RockyMountainAtv.com much cheaper. And if your dealer is charging you that you should go tell him where he needs some of that yamalube at?
