I just read the pipe shootout in the new dirtwheels. I notcied that the jetting for almost all the pipes is really rich compared to stock. I have a E series slip on and K&N with one 1.5" hole in the lid. derestricted snorkel, etc. I am wondering if the reccomended 143/145 is too lean and i could get more power with maybe a 145/147 combo? maybe 147/149? I ride in really cold weather too

They pick the Yoshimura TEC-5A. Their reasons: second best power, quiestest pipe tested, and it's stainless. The Yosh pipe dyno'ed a max. of 46.2 HP @ 6500 rpms with 150/155 jets. A very well done pipe test with graphs for each pipe so you can see where the power is increased in the range. The only thing I didn't like was there was no "quiet" pipes tested. Acording to their equipment the stock Raptor pipe runs 92 dB, and the quiestest aftermarket pipe (the Yosh) comes in at 100 dB. For the record, the best power was the CT Sonic: 48.6 HP @ 7100 rpm running 170/175 mainjets.

Velociraptor, Is your jetting setup with the nstock needle assembly? I have got a dynojet kit with needles . How much did you do with the airbox?

glad to see a relatively complete review, some things that should be noted though: the ct pipe included a pro design pro flow system, k&n air filter and no airbox lid and 170/175 main jets, a nice complete system, but those mods alone should account for 3-5 hp. and while they did not list torque curves. I was impressed that the ct system delivered as advertized (50hp or 48.6 to be exact). good review worth reading, all systems tested showed a major improvement over stock, too bad the GYT-R system was not tested and DMC, DG were a "no show"

I haven't read the magazine yet, but was dissapointed to see that the DMC wasn't tested. Did they say anything about the DMC in the article or were they just left out of the test? I am trying to setup a few dyno runs this weekend, if all goes well I will have some results Sat. evening. I will run with and without the airbox lid just to see what happens.

Velociraptor:The top contenders ran with no airbox lids on. most had airbox mods some did not. They concluded that those pipes could obtain a higher peak horsepower figure similar to the ct pipe if they too ran fatter jetting with no air box lid.

They made an interesting comparison. In their 400ex pipe shootout, the best pipe made only one horsepower over stock. with the Raptor and a CT pipe (w no lid/pro-flo filter and their titanium jetts) we are talking 48.6 vs. 35.6 stock. Thats 13 additional horses that can be bolted on.

This anwers the the debates we have been having about our diffrent pipes. I have the FMF power core IV set-up. dirtwheels says 43.9. Now My quad is set-up for MX. Now, i have raced CT piped raptors set-up for dragging and have won and lost drags. When i lost, maybe a quad length. How can this be? the CT gives 48.6. This is how. it's all about the jetting and breathing of your Raptor. Thats why the 400ex only gained 1 horse. People who don't own a raptor and laugh at these advertised gains have never looked at a stock airbox snorkle on the Raptor. Yamaha just about suffocates the quad to keep it from becoming a legal nightmare. My air box lid looks like swiss cheese and i run the pro-flo with jetting. thats why i'm running with the CT's.

Do you need to go out and by a yoshi or CT. I don't think so. dial in the breathing/jetting. thats what i took from the article. and that answers what i've come across ligning up against diffrent pipes.

thoughts?
